Protesting FUTA students barricade highway, blame gatemen for colleague’s death..

Students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday, barricaded the Akure-Ilesa Expressway to protest against the killing of one of their colleagues in an accident on Monday.

The Punch gathered that five students of the institution had a road accident outside the campus, but were rushed to the school for first aid at the health centre.

However, the guards allegedly refused to open the gate for them.

One of the victims, Adeyinka Daniel, a 200-level student of the Department of Software Engineering, died on Tuesday.

The death of the student was said to have sparked off the protest.

The protesters alleged that the deceased would have survived if he had been allowed to get first aid at the health centre of the institution.

According to an eyewitness, the protest led to traffic on the busy expressway for several hours, as some travellers took alternative routes to continue their journey.

The National President of the Ondo State Students Association, Mr Ayoade Kikiowo, said the deceased died due to the negligence of FUTA management.

The Head of Media and Protocols of FUTA, Mr Adengbenro Adebanjo, in a statement, confirmed the development and described the death of the student as sad and unfortunate.

According to the statement, the university had ordered an immediate review of the incident in order to ascertain the circumstances that led to it.
